Half of Seoul Gone in Five Days: Spain’s Wildfire Nightmare

Spanish authorities reported that a wildfire in the province of Guadalajara, northeast of Madrid, burned through more than 13,000 hectares and forced roughly 800 residents across 16 villages to evacuate. Over 500 firefighters were deployed, but with winds driving the flames at a rate of 60 meters per minute, containment efforts were described as extremely difficult.

Separately, a wildfire that broke out on the 15th in the northeastern province of Zaragoza consumed 14,400 hectares and displaced approximately 1,100 residents. Together, just these two major fires wiped out an area equivalent to 45% of Seoul — in under five days.

Earlier in the month, on July 9th, a fire in the southern province of Almería destroyed 7,000 hectares of forest and killed 13 people. Spain alone has already seen more than 80,000 hectares burn this year — nearly double the damage recorded during last year’s record-breaking fire season.

Flames Without Borders — France, Greece, the UK, and Norway

The famous Fontainebleau Forest near Paris was also engulfed, partially closing a major north-south highway. Wildfires broke out in quick succession across the UK as well, with fire danger in central and southern England climbing to its highest level. The UK’s National Fire Chiefs Council explained that a prolonged dry spell since May had left trees and soil dangerously parched.

In Greece, wildfires fanned by strong winds spread rapidly through pine forests near the village of Madna, west of Athens. In Thessaloniki, a recycling plant fire merging with a nearby wildfire produced toxic smoke, prompting authorities to order residents to stay indoors.

In Norway, a fire that started in a residential building in Drammen, in the country’s south, spread to the hills behind the town on the afternoon of the 17th. Over 100 homes were destroyed and more than 400 people were left homeless — the worst fire in modern Norwegian history.

By July 15th, Europe had recorded more than 1,130 wildfires this year, burning through approximately 188,300 hectares — far surpassing the 20-year average of 516 fires covering roughly 112,000 hectares over the same period.

The “Perfect Fire Conditions” That the Heatwave Created

The Andalusian wildfires are believed to have been sparked by a downed power line, but analysts point out that months of relentless heat had baked the ground bone dry, creating a landscape primed to ignite at the slightest trigger.

During the peak heatwave period from June 22 to 28, more than 10,000 excess deaths were recorded across 27 European countries — a spike that experts attribute directly to the record-breaking temperatures. Add wildfire fatalities and those directly affected by the blazes, and the full scale of Europe’s climate disaster this summer becomes almost impossible to quantify.

The record-shattering heatwave that had been baking Central Europe and the Balkans is forecast to ease this week, with temperatures in some areas expected to drop as much as 10 to 12 degrees below seasonal norms. That sounds like relief — but the trouble is what comes next.

As cold air from the north collides with the hot, humid air still sitting over the Mediterranean, intense thunderstorms and heavy localized rainfall are likely across Italy, Greece, Romania, and the Black Sea coast. However, analysts caution that the long preceding drought means this rain is unlikely to fully extinguish the accumulated wildfire risk — and could actually cause secondary disasters of its own.

Meanwhile, the Iberian Peninsula — Spain and Portugal — is forecast to remain near 40°C this week, meaning a sharp climatic split is taking shape across the continent.
